Podcasting has become huge business and has definitely become mainstream.
You don’t have to be Joe Rogan with his $100m+ deal with Spotify to be a successful podcaster.
However, as we move into 2021, the Rogan-Spotify deal highlights an important point:
Podcasting is a 2010 strategy. It’s 2020, and everybody is about video now. We’ve had nearly a year of everybody doing Zoom calls from home. We’re a Zoom nation now. We’re used to video. It’s not new. And it’s almost 2021.
Don’t get me wrong – podcasts are great! I’m a big listener myself. But the world has become more sophisticated and now audiences expect more. 2021 is going to bring new opportunities for you, and this blueprint will set you up for success.
It’s All About Video
Joe Rogan was already doing his podcast as a YouTube video show too, though for some in his audience, it was the audio podcast that they subscribed to. Yet with the Spotify deal, access to the video version of the Rogan show is as easy as the audio version, using their app.
The trend for 2021 is more video shows. Rogan was the first Spotify producer to get the new video feature, but you can bet that will be opened up to other creators in the coming months.
Similarly, with the new Apple TV+ service, which is currently only available to major content creators by invitation, I predict that too will be opened up to other content creators.
You can already get your show on Amazon Prime Direct. Telling your audience that they can get your show on Amazon Prime is very impressive.
(I also suspect that Netflix is planning something similar – opening up their platform to a much wider range of content producers. If you have your own show, you might be willing to forgo any compensation from Netflix, just so that you can achieve reaching their massive and engaged audience for exposure. That’s exactly what’s happened in the music industry with Spotify.)
For Spotify and Apple, it’s all about the advertising dollars.
More shows means more audience – which means more ad spend.
Even before Spotify and Apple open up to online TV show producers, right now there are opportunities and low-hanging fruit that you’re missing out on if you’re just producing an audio-only podcast. You’re almost entirely missing the chance to gain a much bigger following on Social Media, which has now become widely adopted at all ages.
Podcasts vs Social Media
According to the Infinite Dial 2020 from Edison Research, 55% of Americans (155 million) have listened to a podcast – up from 51% in 2019.
37% of Americans (104 million) listened to a podcast in the month before the research was released in March 2020 – up from 32% in 2019.
Here’s the big HOWEVER! In 2020, research from Pew and others indicates that at least 79% of Americans are regular users of Social Media.
Even more compelling, is that more than twice as many people watch videos on YouTube than listen to podcasts.
